CENSORED
'CENSORED features artists whose practices confront the boundaries of institutional acceptability. The exhibition highlights practices that have been marginalised, rejected, or misunderstood within traditional institutions... David Akinola, Ballsy, Smart Barnett , Nikola Bobowik , John Ledger, Lawlight Maledictus, Jessic White , and Evita Ziemele, each engage with themes that provoke discomfort, political dissent, social taboo and aesthetic extremity, revealing how institutions navigate controversy and risk when faced with challenging material.
The exhibition examines how controversial work is framed, regulated, or restricted within contemporary art spaces. Moreover, the importance of audience responses, whether discomfort, resistance, or curiosity, are treated as critical indicators of how cultural norms are upheld or disrupted. These insights inform curatorial strategies that prioritise openness and critical engagement rather than institutional caution.
Through spatial and contextual design, CENSORED creates conditions in which difficult work can be encountered without dilution. The exhibition ultimately argues for a curatorial practice that supports artists working at the edges of acceptability and expands institutional discourse around controversy, risk, and artistic freedom.
