BETHANY CASTLE ... AKA ME !

I am an MA Contemporary Curation student with a BA undergraduate degree in photography (1st class hons). Aiming to become a community-engaged curator, this to me means conveying art to the audience in such a way that it evokes an emotional response, be it joy, outrage or enlightenment. Collaborating with communities and local artists to showcase their stories, bring their visions to life, and convey them to the public. I currently volunteer at the Portico, one of Manchester’s most renowned and long-standing historic libraries. I also have a handful of personal interests, these include karate, kubudo, cooking and reading.

Curatorial statement

My curatorial practice centres on socially engaged and community‑focused approaches to exhibition‑making. I work across institutional and independent contexts, collaborating closely with artists to develop accessible, dialogue‑driven projects that respond to contemporary cultural and socio‑political issues. My methodology is grounded in care, collaboration, and critical reflection, with a commitment to widening participation and supporting emerging voices.

I am interested in how art can create spaces for dialogue, visibility, and shared authorship. Working across community settings and contemporary art environments, I develop exhibitions that foreground inclusivity, lived experience, and interdisciplinary exchange. I am interested in curating as a relational process—one that connects people, places, and ideas while challenging traditional institutional boundaries.
