Remnants explores how internal and external spaces work with the psychological sense of place, and how those spaces are intertwined with our emotions. Assessing the relationship between our memories and the places where they take place, I focus on depicting grief and exploring how people cope with loss.
Following the loss of my grandparents, I returned to Northern Ireland, where they lived and grew up... visiting places where I fondly remember spending my time with them. Being surrounded by these places allowed me to understand how emotions and memories are bound to the space.
We are often surrounded by objects that evoke memories of those who have passed. From the smell of freshly buttered toast, a salty shoreline breeze, a scrap of old newspaper or even the smog of a freshly smoked cigarette...! Grief is something we all experience, and this work seeks to appraise how it is evoked... by exploring its presence in our everyday lives and how the most mundane tasks can feel so melancholic.
My journey enabled me to come to terms with the loss of my grandparents, facilitating the grieving process, via spatial submergence, evoking long forgotten memories... soon to be fading cognitive remnants, callously eroded by time.
